Art: In View

May 12, 2011
The Maui News

Explore artists in the midst of their own explorations. "Allusions of Space: Recent Work by Dorothy Faison, Carl Jennings and Jennifer Owen" will give viewers a chance to experience new, innovative work by three artists pushing the bounds of contemporary art.

The exhibition opens with a reception and intimate walk-through with the artists from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Schaefer International Gallery in Kahului.

Faison, of Oahu, offers an evolving narrative of images that connect personal, environmental and pseudo-scientific ideas about the veiled meaning of lawns in "The Lawnboat Chronicles." Carl Jennings, also of Oahu, presents a series of paintings that explores humankind's place within the cosmos via various themes, relationships and encounters in "The Houses of Astronomers." And Maui artist Jennifer Owen draws on her influences from architecture and the human spirit to push the forms of clay, depicting symbolic spaces for people to contemplate and come together, according to a gallery release.
