Boarders program upgrades on agenda

KAHULUI - The Lahainaluna Boarders Association will meet at 4 p.m. Saturday to discuss efforts to improve the school's boarding program, which came under the threat of budget cuts in 2010.

The meeting is open to all former boarders and to program supporters on Maui.

The event will be at 596 Kea St. in Kahului. The meeting agenda will include discussion of a summer work project for the David Malo dormitory during the summer break.

Hawaiian linguist appointed to KIRC

HONOLULU - Hawaiian language expert Christopher M. Kaliko Baker has been appointed an interim member of the Kahoolawe Island Reserve Commission.

Baker is a longtime member of the Protect Kahoolawe Ohana, and is a doctoral candidate in linguistics at the University of Hawaii at Manoa's Kawaihuelani Center for Hawaiian Language, where he is also a Hawaiian language instructor. He also is a noted Hawaiian language playwright and the lead cultural practitioner for the makahiki ceremony on Kahoolawe.

Public works topic of mayor's discussion

WAILUKU - Mayor Alan Arakawa will discuss public works projects with Managing Director Keith Regan and Public Works Director David Goode on a live call-in television show this week.

"Your County with Mayor Arakawa" will air at 7 p.m. Wednesday on Akaku: Maui Community Television, Channel 53.

Viewers can call 873-3430 to submit questions. The show will be rebroadcast at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays through June.
