RICHARD HO'OPI'I TO PLAY FREE CONCERT

Grammy winner and falsetto master Richard Ho'opi'i will treat Lahaina listeners to a free concert from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today at the Baldwin Home Museum lawn on the corner of Front and Dickenson streets. In 2003, the artist released his first solo album, "Ululani," a mixture of favorite songs from his Maui hometown, Kahakuloa. He was presented the National Endowment for the Arts Folk Heritage Fellowship, America's highest honor for traditional artists. MUSIC, WINE, FOOD AND MORE AT FEST

EMCEE / OPEN MIC AT DA RUSH IN S. MAUI

Rush into an evening of Maui hip-hop artists and wave riding from 6 to 9 p.m. at Da Rush near LuLu's in Kihei. Hosted by Goldawn Won & The Universe, the emcee / open-mic event will benefit The Seed Project, with a requested donation of $5. Local youths face many challenges, and The Seed Project helps redirect their futures with workshops in the multimedia realm, focusing on their talents and developing their skills, according to the organization. HUMAN WITH DIVINO & FRIENDS CONCERT

JIMMY MAC & THE KOOL KATS CONCERT

Jimmy Mac & the Kool Kats will play a benefit concert for Shriners Hospitals from 5 to 10 p.m. at Stella Blues Cafe in Kihei. Ocean Langlois, 13, organized the benefit to thank local Shriners organizations for years of free medical assistance as she was born with a leg defect that required multiple surgeries. MISS MAUI FILIPINA COMPETITION STARTS

The 52nd Miss Maui Filipina Scholarship Pageant will showcase five contestants vying for the title of Miss Maui Filipina 2011 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa in Lahaina. For details, previous story.

ZENSHIN DAIKO BACK AT CASTLE THEATER

Zenshin Daiko returns to Castle Theater for its 12th annual festival featuring Kagami Kai at 7 p.m. at Maui Arts & Cultural Center's Castle Theater. A taiko production is athletically balletic as drums are pounded in vibrant synchronicity with body movement. Kagami Kai is a mochi tsuki group (which literally means they pound mochi while playing along to the beat) based in the San Francisco Bay Area. OBON SEASON KICKS OFF AROUND MAUI

STAR-STUDDED MAUI FILM FEST KICKS OFF

The 2011 Maui Film Festival gets under way with a screening of "Page One: Inside The New York Times" at 5 p.m. at Maui Arts & Cultural Center and the Opening Night Twilight Reception at 5:30 at Capische Restaurant at Hotel Wailea followed by Celestial Cinema screenings and a Starry Night Moondance at Tommy Bahama.
