Obon festival today, Saturday in Lahaina
LAHAINA - Lahaina Jodo Mission will celebrate its annual obon festival today and Saturday at the church at 12 Ala Moana St. in Lahaina.
Today's festivities will begin at 7 p.m. with a prayer offering service held by the congregation. There will be no dance or food concessions today.
On Saturday, the service will be at 6:30 p.m., followed by a lantern procession and ceremony to the beach adjacent to the temple. Bon dance, featuring live music by the Maui Taiko group, will follow the ceremony. Food booths open at 6 p.m. There will be Japanese foods along with pan-Pacific delicacies.
Free bus transportation is available for dancers and worshipers on Saturday only. The bus will leave Kahului Hongwanji Mission at 5:30 p.m.
The services will be conducted by resident minister, the Rev. Gensho Hara.
Jehovah's Witnesses convention begins July 8
KAHULUI - The 15 Maui congregations of Jehovah's Witnesses will hold their annual three-day convention starting July 8 at the Castle and McCoy theaters of the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.
All residents are invited to attend the convention.
The daily themes are based on passages of the Bible.
The July 8 session will begin with discourses on "Why We Need God's Kingdom to Come" and "How We Know That God's Kingdom Will Come Soon."
The July 9 program begins with the discourse "Let Your Light Sign!" followed by a baptism and the ordination of new ministers.
On the afternoon of July 10, there will be a drama based on the Genesis narrative about Joseph titled, "Young Ones - Be Discreet and Wise."
Sessions begin each day at 9:20 a.m. Admission is free. On July 8, the afternoon session will begin at 1:50 p.m. On July 9, the afternoon session will begin at 1:35 p.m. On July 10, the afternoon session will begin at 1:30 p.m.
No collections will be taken.
Summer concert to be held at Maui?Mall
KAHULUI - The Kahului Union Church Family Choir and Flute Ensemble will present a summer concert at 6:30 p.m. July 8 at the Maui Mall.
Featured flutists are Rachel Hasegawa, Liane Nakamae and Ann Kuraya.
