Obon festival begins tonight

KAHULUI - Kahului Hongwanji Buddhist Temple will hold its annual obon festival tonight and Saturday night.

There will be special dance performances by Nakayama Minyo Kai tonight and Jinpu Kai Maui on Saturday night.

There will be a service at 7 p.m. each night. Dancing will begin following the service and the special dance performances.

Food offerings including chow fun, andagi, chicken mini bento, teriyaki meat mini bento, shave ice, boomerang, chili, Spam musubi and hot dogs for 50 cents each (limit two per person while supply lasts) to celebrate this year's centennial anniversary of the temple.

Obon-goers may also write messages of remembrance and aloha on paper ribbons that will be hung around the yagura in the middle of the obon dance ring.

Transformed man to speak

PUKALANI - A man who was left for dead after a drug-deal gone bad and who recovered from his bullet and stab wounds will be speaking July 24 to 27 at Grace Church.

Isaiah Reed will talk about his life and how God changed and transformed his life and the lives of his family.

He will be speaking July 24 at 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. and at 6:30 p.m. from July 25 to 27. His appearances are open to the public and free.

Grace Church is located at 55 Makaena Place, across the street from King Kekaulike High School.

Guest preacher to lead services

MAKAWAO - The Rev. Robert Montgomery will be the guest preacher at Makawao Union Church for the next two Sundays.

Montgomery was the pastor at Lahaina and Honolua Methodist churches from 1961 to 1964. During those years, his two youngest children were born.

He and his wife, Margaret, returned to Maui in 1997 and ministered to homeless people and others in West Maui for six years. For three of those years, Montgomery preached at Lahuiokalani Congregational Church in Honokowai, served as interim pastor at Lahaina United Methodist, and occasionally led services at Wananalua Congregational Church in Hana.

The couple resides in Oklahoma.

Services Sunday and on July 24 begin at 10:30 a.m.

Makawao Union Church is an interdenominational community church celebrating 150 years on Maui. It is located at 1445 Baldwin Ave. For more information, call 579-9261.
