SLACK KEY CONCERT WITH JEFF PETERSON
George Kahumoku Jr.'s Slack Key Masters show features Jeff Peterson at 7:30 tonight at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center's McCoy Studio Theater. Peterson grew up on the slopes of Haleakala where he was introduced to Hawaiian music by his father, a paniolo. As a performer, Peterson has had the honor to work with a wide range of artists from Hawaiian slack key masters to rock and jazz legends to symphony orchestras. ARTS COLLIDE AT 3RD ANNUAL BODY SLAM
Street art meets body art at Maui Slam Poetry's third annual Body Slam, a cutting-edge, late-night event that fuses literary, performing and visual arts at 9:30 tonight at Casanova in Makawao. Bodypainting masters Rachel Deboer and Rachel G will present poetry-inspired tribal grafitti bodypainting that will transform dancing models into "urban goddesses." INAUGURAL LANA'I UKULELE FEST STARTS
The alluring sounds of ukulele will sweep the island of Lanai during the two-day inaugural Lana'i Ukulele Festival, presented by the Four Seasons Resorts Lana'i, HawaiiONTV.com and Jazz Alley TV. Throughout the festival, free performances by Hawaii artists will be offered, including Grammy winner Richard Ho'opi'i, Tony Conjugacion, Brittni Paiva, Herb Otah Jr., Walt Keale, David Kamakahi, Benny Uyetake, CJ Helekahi and the Lana'i Ukulele Club. DANCING, MUSIC AT 'DANCE TO REMEMBER'
"A Dance to Remember" fundraiser and silent auction to benefit Maui's youth will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. at Kihei Community Center. Presented by the Julie Claire Holmes Dance Scholarship, the gala evening will feature live and DJ music, dance, performances and a potluck dinner. CORAL BLOOMS AT MAUI OCEAN CENTER
It's entertainment of an environmental kind. The Maui Ocean Center will host its ninth Coral Spawning Spectacle from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Maalaea facility. In Hawaii, the phenomenon known as coral spawning takes place during the summer months under the light of a new moon. Some species of coral have predictable spawning, and this summer, rice coral is expected to be released Tuesday. Explore the wonder of coral reproduction in the after-dark aquarium with a presentation from local coral expert Pauline Fiene. Complimentary desserts and beverages will be offered.
