INTERACTIVE STORIES FOR KEIKI UPCOUNTRY
Author, pianist and composer Patricia Desiderio Fisher will present a special interactive storytime at Makawao Public Library at 10 a.m. today in the children's section. Keiki ages 5 and older, accompanied by a parent or caregiver, are invited to hear Fisher read from her book "Inside the Magic: Music, Poetry & Art" in a rhythmic manner; children can explore and translate the interplay of music and poetry into a visual impression. WAILUKU 1ST FRIDAY: SLAM, BREAKDANCING
Groove to the funky jazz of SLAM with David Choy on sax at Maui's favorite monthly block party. The local band will perform in front of the Historic Iao Theater at Wailuku First Friday, with emcee Pat Matsumoto and Aloha Poetry Slam. The event, where food, activities and entertainment pack Central Maui streets, spans 6 to 9 p.m.; Market Street closes at 5:30. A breakdancing competition at Request Music; Joel Katz playing Hawaiian steel guitar; street magic with Timonthy Wenk; and other performances will be featured. MAUI TAIKO TO TAKE STAGE AT MAUI MALL
Don't miss a beat as Maui Taiko, a nonprofit group of Japanese drumming musicians, performs from 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. at Maui Mall's center stage. The centuries-old taiko instrument was used in battle, cultural and religious settings; now the art form by incorporating traditional Japanese and world rhythms in its music, and blends dance and movement in its performances. BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS YOUTH DANCE WITH DJ
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui presents a youth dance featuring DJ music by Chilltown Productions from 7 to 10 p.m. at Eddie Tam Gym in Makawao for youth ages 9 to 17.
