3 MPD officers face suspensions

August 9, 2011
The Maui News

WAILUKU - Suspensions of two to 10 days were ordered for three Maui Police Department officers in internal investigations that concluded in June, police reported.

The 10-day suspension was for failing to properly report and submit evidence in May 2010.

A three-day suspension was ordered for an officer, with a past history, who hit a parked vehicle in a motor vehicle collision in April.

The two-day suspension was for an officer who, while off duty last August, performed improper and unauthorized traffic control.

Oral reprimands were given to an officer who should have shown more empathy toward a victim in February and to two officers involved in motor vehicle crashes in February - one who hit a parked vehicle and the other who hit a medial barrier.

Charges were not sustained for allegedly failing to attend assigned training in December and for alleged rude conduct while assisting the public in January.

The names of the officers were not made public.

People who wish to comment on the Maui Police Department or the actions of its employees may contact the employee's commander or write to Chief Gary Yabuta in care of the Maui Police Department, 55 Mahalani St., Wailuku 96793.
