Crews put out Paia, Kahului brush fires
Firefighters extinguished brush fires near the entrance to the Maui Lani golf course in Kahului and in Paia on Wednesday, a fire official said.
Paia firefighters responded to a 9:57 a.m. call of a fire on Baldwin Avenue just below Holomua Road, arriving on the scene at 10:30 a.m. A Kahului tanker and minitruck also responded to extinguish the fire, which burned grass and small shrubs in a 100-square-foot area.
Fire crews left the scene shortly after 11 a.m.
At 3:21 p.m., Kahului firefighters were sent to a brush fire along Maui Lani Parkway near the entrance to the golf course. Firefighters were on the scene at 3:27 p.m., bringing the fire under control at 3:36 p.m. and extinguishing it at 4:31 p.m. A Kahului tanker and hazardous materials crew also responded.
The cause of both fires was undetermined.

Kula AARP meeting will host Yamashita
KULA - State Rep. Kyle Yamashita, D-Upcountry, will be speaking during the Kula AARP meeting Monday at the Kula Community Center.
He will be discussing developments in the last legislative session. The meeting is to begin with refreshments at 9 a.m., followed by the business meeting at 9:30 a.m.
Members of the public are invited, and no reservations are necessary.

Akaka will speak at event honoring vets
WAIKAPU - U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka will speak during a Maui County Veterans Council mahalo nui recognition luncheon from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 26 at the Maui Tropical Plantation.
Any organization that wants to make a presentation to the senator, who has decided not to seek re-election in 2012, is welcome to do so, the council said.
Akaka has long chaired the U.S. Senate Veterans Committee.
Tickets cost $5 and are available at the Credit Associates office on Wells Street in Wailuku.
