MPD accreditation renewed by agency

WAILUKU - The Maui Police Department has had its accreditation renewed for another three years by the

Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.

The reaccreditation with "meritorious" distinction was confirmed at a conference in Cincinnati on July 27 to 30. The distinction is given to agencies that have been accredited for 15 or more continuous years.

MPD has undertaken the voluntary accreditation process since 1996 to meet professional standards established by the commission. This is the fifth accreditation for the department.

MPD was the first law enforcement agency in Hawaii to be accredited.

The Honolulu Police Department has since been accredited. The Hawaii County and the Kauai police departments and state Department of Land and Natural Resources are in various stages of the initial accreditation process.
