Ku Mai Ka Hula • Kahului

September 8, 2011
The Maui News
Be swayed by the flowing skirts, the graceful gestures and the power of the cultural competition. Ku Mai Ka Hula 2011 will return to the stage from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater to celebrate six years of international hula competition featuring group and solo dancers from Hawaii and Japan. The groups will vie in adult male and female categories, along with solo kahiko (traditional) and ‘auana (modern) hula. The contest is part of a longstanding friendship between Hawaii and Japan, which is eloquently delivered in this beautiful and inspirational event, according to organizers. 'Ku Mai Ka Hula is a wonderful opportunity for all who enjoy hula to come together and celebrate and enjoy its excitement and grace,” Hokulani Holt, MACC Cultural Programs director, said in a release. “If you are a hula enthusiast, this is where you should be.” Logo merchandise will be available from various halau hula, and Hawaiian-style crafts are offered for sale from island artisans. Tickets are $25 for adults and $12.50 for keiki 12 and younger, plus applicable fees. Call the MACC box office at 242-7469 or visit www.mauiarts.org.
