Get schooled with Maui Slam Poetry at 9:30 tonight at Casanova in Makawao. Computer nerds, jocks, preps, thesbos, plastics, art freaks and band geeks are called to the front of the class to perform inspired slam poetry and open mic, during the Back to School Poetry Slam competition, which offers $100 in cash for the top prize. Boomshot and Douglas DeBoer will bring turntable sorcery and visual alchemy. Aaron Holmes is guest emcee. Sign up to perform by 9:30 p.m.; prop, costumes and music are welcome. Not performing? OKTOBERFEST KICKS OFF AT MULLIGAN'S
Grab your lederhosen and celebrate Oktoberfest at Mulligan's on the Blue in Wailea. Presented by the Rotary Club of Kihei-Wailea, the bash kicks off from 4 to 9 p.m. with German food, drinks, music, dancing, pipes, oompah band and live and silent auctions.
