* LET YOURSELF BE TAKEN FOR A LOOP WITH LOCAL BAND MOTHxp. The experiential rock duo — James “Cotton” Hartman and James Bowersox — will headline the Maui Thing stage during the island’s biggest block party, Wailuku First Friday. And it’s a concert not to be missed — Mothxp’s full-sensory shows, all-original sets and disregard for prerecorded tracks and loops promise to catch listeners off-guard — in a good way. Market Street closes to traffic for Wailuku First Friday festivities from 6 to 9 p.m. Events spill onto Main and Vineyard streets. Other entertainment includes Benny Uyetake and the S.E. Kalama Intermediate Ukulele band at the Wailuku Banyan Tree Park; Gene Argel Ohana at Cafe O Lei; magicians Brenton Keith and Timothy Wenk; and belly dancing, art, music and treats at Body Alive Yoga studio.
* GET READY to rock, Maui. If two Friday celebrations weren’t enough, the County of Maui will launch a unified Four Fridays effort in November in town centers near you, according to County Communications Director Rod Antone. Adding to Wailuku’s First Friday and Paia’s Fourth Friday will be Lahaina on the second and Makawao on the third Friday of each month, said Yuki Lei Sugimura, who helps organize Wailuku’s event. Antone said the county can’t yet confirm details, but the project will be unveiled during a press conference Oct. 25. “Fall is going to be filled with events for Maui County,” Antone said. “We have Halloween on Front Street; we’ve got the Makani Surf Classic; we’ve got the EA Sports basketball tournament. Visitors may want to come to Maui and stay for two months — it’s going to be that fun.”
