LAUNIUPOKO - A 19-year-old pedestrian died early Sunday morning after being hit by two vehicles on Honoapiilani Highway in Launiupoko, police said.

On Sunday, police were looking for information on the second vehicle that hit the pedestrian near Kai Hele Ku Street. Police said the vehicle fled the scene after the collision that occurred around 4:22 a.m.

The victim was identified as Failagi Vite Laloulu, of Kahului, who died at the scene.

Police said Laloulu was within the northbound lane of Honoapiilani Highway near Launiupoko Park when a red 2005 Chevrolet pickup truck heading toward Lahaina collided with Laloulu.

Laloulu was then propelled into the south or Wailuku-bound lane of travel and was struck by another vehicle, which did not stop and was not described.

The operator of the first vehicle, the Chevrolet, stopped and remained at the scene. The operator, the only one in the truck, was not injured and was wearing a seat belt.

Those with information about the unidentified vehicle involved in the crash should call the Maui Police Department's Traffic Division at 270-6537.

This is Maui County's 18th traffic fatality of the year, compared to 10 last year at the same time.

For around two hours after the accident, a portion of Honoapiilani Highway was closed to allow police to investigate the scene. Later, traffic was rerouted in the area and the road was completely opened around 8:30 a.m.
