Governor backs easier-to-get visas

October 20, 2011
The Associated Press
Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie holds up a China Daily newspaper as he speaks during the China-U.S. Governors Forum in Beijing on Wednesday. Abercrombie, Hawaii Tourism Authority President Mike McCartney and other state tourism officials are in China to reach out to that country’s booming tourism market. Abercrombie told the China Daily that a good relationship between China and the United States would not only stimulate Hawaii’s economy but also promote cultural understanding. McCartney told the newspaper that the state is strongly supporting efforts to help expedite the process for obtaining travel visas. “We understand the visa process for Chinese visitors is long, and we hope to ease it,” he said. Abercrombie started his Asian trip Oct. 9 and previously stopped in Tokyo and Okinawa. He is scheduled to return to Hawaii today.
