> EXPLORE THE HEIGHTS OF ‘WHEN THE MOUNTAIN CALLS: Nepal, Tibet & Bhutan’ during the film’s world premiere at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater. Created by Emmy Award-winning Maui filmmaker Tom Vendetti and produced by Robert C. Stone, the feature-length documentary follows Vendetti’s experiences from more than three decades of traveling the Himalayas. How can joy prevail for people facing impoverished conditions??Vendetti, a Maui mental health expert, discovers sources of happiness in unexpected places, and changes over the decades to the area’s people, land, climate and culture. Breathtaking footage is enhanced with music and words — by Grammy Award-winning musician Paul Horn and composer Christopher Hedge, and screenwriter Rick Chatenever, The Maui News features editor. The film features appearances by the Dalai Lama, Lama Tenzin, Horn, Tenzing Norgay, Sir Edmond Hilary, the Prime Minister of Bhutan, Dorjee Sherpa and Green Peace China. Follow Vendetti’s journey through meaning, purpose and their sacred, ever-mysterious sources — a trek that’s likely to resonate with the explorers in all of us. Preceding the premiere, Horn and author Ann Mortifee will take the audience on a narrative and musical journey of verse, voice and flute with “In Love with the Mystery.” Tickets are $25, plus applicable fees, available from the MACC box office, 242-7469 and www.mauiarts.org. Seating is open.
