FIRST PHOTO: Artist Hideo Fujiyama of Japan (right) adds details to his ice sculpture with the assistance of Koji Murakami at the International Ice Sculpting Exhibition and Competition on Saturday at the Lahaina Cannery Mall. Fujiyama has been a regular competitor at the event on Maui and has won multiple competitions over the years.

The ice chips will continue to fly from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today , as five artists sculpt 300-pound blocks of ice in a head-to-head competition for a $1,000 cash prize. Ice artists came from Japan and across Hawaii to compete in the annual event. The sculptures will be on display all weekend at the free event.
