KAHULUI -Kicking off movie award season on Maui, the Maui Film Festival's 13th annual celebration of cinema returns to Castle Theater at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center on Tuesday. Dividing its programming into two segments, it will screen expected award contenders through Nov. 26 (taking off Thanksgiving Day and Nov. 25), then will return in December for three weeks of screenings over the holidays.
Billing itself as "16 days long, 50 films wide, one movie high," FirstLight has been a reliable barometer of the winning films, performances and artistic achievements that would go on to be recoganized by Academy Awards and other industry prizes.
Among the screenings are a number of premieres of films that will also screen in limited release on the Mainland to qualify for Oscar consideration, but won't be put in wider general release for weeks or months.
