Kahului – Celebrate the vocal legacy of the Maui-born Kahauanu Lake and his group, the Kahauanu Lake Trio, during the 39th annual Na Mele O Maui Song & Art Competition. The event, Maui’s only countywide Hawaiian song and art competition, is dedicated this year to the Hawaiian music greats; artwork will be inspired by the events, stories and places depicted in songs by the Kahauanu Lake Trio. Sponsored by Ka‘anapali Beach Resort, the song competition, featuring classes from kindergarten through 12th grade, will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center; entry is free. Classroom choirs are judged and prizes are awarded based on musical competence, language proficiency and interpretation, stage presence and all-around enthusiasm. In honor of the Lakes, Gordean Bailey of Kula, kumu hula and former Miss Hawai‘i, will present two hula performances. Hawaiian music icon Kahauanu Lake, who helped found the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame, died March 7, 2011, at age 79. He led the Kahauanu Lake Trio that included his late brother Tommy Lake and Al Machida; the group played in Waikiki in the 1950s.
