Kahului – Get swept away with the 2011 “Innersection” film — footage from four rounds of competition, 25 qualifying surfers, a year of interviews and behind-the-scenes stories. It will screen at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater and will feature appearances by star local surfers Matt Meola, Albee Layer and Hank Gaskell, along with giveaways of three surfboards, cameras, sunglasses and more. Surfer-created, viewer-selected, ocean-inspired Innersection films, in their second year of production by Taylor Steele, bring together free-surfing legends like Pipe master Jamie O’Brien and South American champ Gabriel Villaran, underground dazzlers like Maui’s Albee Layer and New York’s Leif Engstrom, and outsider icons like Santa Cruz’s Josh Mulcoy, Canadian Pete Devries and Maui’s Hank Gaskell. Each surfer teams with directors to compile footage that vies for cash prizes, decided by audience voters. Matt Meola is last year’s $100,000 winner; he’ll be back to defend his title. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for kids 12 and younger, plus applicable fees. The event is a Maui Film Festival fundraiser for the relocation of the north shore’s now-closed Kuau Mart.
