I am a huge fan of the whole Occupy movement going on right now, and am sad to see that many people are getting arrested for speaking their thoughts.
On Nov. 17, I saw some demonstrators on Kaahumanu Avenue outside the Kahului Shopping Center, but I fail to see how that location can do anyone any good. The Kahului Shopping Center is filled with mom-and-pop stores and restaurants.
A better location would have been one of Maui's big-box stores - huge conglomerates that have put many smaller stores out of business around the country and often pay their employees so little that the only place they can shop is at the big-box store. Or how about a bank, which is the ideal of the whole movement anyway?
Here's an idea to really stick it to the 1 percent: Stop using your credit/debit cards. Don't use them for anything. Not only do they charge you for using them, they charge businesses for accepting them - roughly 3.5 percent of the entire sale including the sales tax. That's right, they tax the taxes from taxpayers. Chew on that for a while before you occupy a highway.
