LIHUE (AP) - A 21-year-old Kauai man was shot and killed by a police officer Friday after he allegedly fatally stabbed a neighbor and attacked three other people.

The Kauai Police Department said it's investigating the incident, which began at 11 a.m. when the suspect allegedly attacked his 83-year-old grandfather in Waimea Valley.

He then allegedly stabbed a 68-year-old female neighbor who died of her wounds. Nearby, he allegedly attacked a 63-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman outside their home.

The police say the officer told the man to stop, but the man allegedly continued to attack. The police say the officer then shot the suspect.

The suspect then attempted to run away but collapsed. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The three surviving victims were taken to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital.

The police will place the officer on administrative leave while the department carries out criminal and internal investigations in accordance with KPD policy.

The police said their preliminary investigation showed that the officer shot the suspect because of the nature of the victims' wounds, the suspect refused to comply with the officer's order, and because he might seriously injure or kill others if he wasn't stopped.
