Holiday twist on silver beings

December 15, 2011
The Maui News
A trio of statues along Kula Highway sport holiday decorations Saturday afternoon. The “Golems” created by Kula goldsmith and artist Sherri Dhyan were reduced to two Sunday night after high winds snapped one of the statues in half. “You could say Mother Nature brought him down,” Dhyan said.
She said she created the Golems, which stand between 7 and 10 feet tall, out of surfboard blank foam. Carving with a chain saw, glassing them like you would a surfboard, she finished with automotive paint that includes aluminum to give them their distinctive metallic look. She said folks have stopped her at the store to insist they saw the statues moving as they drove by. For the holidays, brother Mark Speilberg asked if he could add homemade decorations. “Normally they are just silver beings over there, but he wanted to give them a holiday twist,” Dhyan said.
