Kihei park alcohol ban given initial OK

December 17, 2011
The Maui News

WAILUKU - Maui County Council members voted 8-0 Friday to give initial approval for a ban on the consumption of alcohol at the new South Maui Community Park.

Council Member Gladys Baisa was absent and excused.

The measure came from the council's Economic Development, Agriculture and Recreation Committee, which earlier this month deferred for further study measures to outlaw drinking at Kalama and Cove parks in Kihei.

The bill to disallow drinking at the South Maui Community Park will need to come back to the council for second and final reading before being forwarded to Mayor Alan Arakawa for his signature.

In other action, council members approved on first reading a bill authorizing the director of the Department of Public Works to adopt administrative rules for post-construction stormwater quality best management practices.

Councilors adopted a resolution to approve the location and boundaries of approximately 124,000 square feet of land for expansion of the Maui Memorial Park cemetery, and they passed a resolution confirming the appointment of Patricia Maluo to the Maui County Cultural Resources Commission.

Her term would expire March 31, 2015. She replaces Jacey Laborte on the commission.
