Police have identified the 17-year-old victim of a fatal Christmas Eve pedestrian accident as Zachariah Aubut of Kihei.
Aubut had been walking along the mauka side of Mokulele Highway when he tried to run across to the other side and was struck and killed by a 2004 Saturn Ion traveling toward Kahului, officials said. The accident occurred at 12:53 p.m. about half a mile north of the Kealia National Wildlife Reserve Road.
The 21-year-old woman driving the sedan, who was wearing her seat belt, suffered some lacerations to her right hand, left arm and left leg, and was treated by emergency personnel at the scene and released. The woman's two-year-old daughter, who was in a child safety seat, was not injured.
The Kahului-bound lane of the highway was closed for about 3 1/2 hours before being reopened by police at 4:23 p.m., according to a county news release.
