MYSTIC ISLAND FEST KICKS OFF IN W. MAUI
The fifth annual Mystic Island Festival kicks off today and continues through Monday at Camp Olowalu. The four-and-a-half-day camping event features live music, DJs, dance, yoga, workshops, entertainment, community building, sustainability and green living efforts and more. Performance highlights include music by Chris Berry (Panjea) with Michael Kang (String Cheese Incident), Jaya Lakshmi, DJ David Starfire and DJ Kaminanda. FREE HAWAIIAN MUSIC CONCERT IN LAHAINA
Live Hawaiian music continues on Front Street with the free Hawaiian Music Series concert featuring Josh Kahula and Preston Ako. The concert marks the new time for the ongoing monthly Lahaina Restoration Foundation series - from 6 to 7:30 p.m. the last Thursday of the month at the Baldwin Home Lawn in Lahaina. Ako is known for his Hawaiian music; he often performs with his father, Sam, and his brother, John, in the Ako Trio. Kahula, also an accomplished musician and leader of isle band Nuff Sedd, has performed with Hawaiian artists such as Keali'i Reichel. 'SHELLS' ON DISPLAY AT BAILEY HOUSE
Be entertained with the nature. Maui malacologist and author Mike Severns will give a presentation on land and sea shells of Hawaii and the process of creating his recently published catalog "Shells of the Hawaiian Islands" at 6 p.m. at Bailey House Museum. A small exhibit of shells from the Maui Historical Society collection, including rare and extinct Hawaiian land snail shells, will also be on view. FREE TALK STORY WITH FREDA PAYNE
The 2012 Maui Invitational Music Festival presents singer and actress Freda Payne in a musical tribute in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center on Thursday, Feb. 2. As a prelude to her concert, Payne invites the public to join her on at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua for an intimate evening of talking story about her road to stardom and beyond. Best known for her 1970 hit single "Band of Gold," Payne has also appeared in films, television and Broadway. She has worked with such luminaries as Quincy Jones, Pearl Bailey and Bill Cosby, recorded 21 albums and toured around the world. Her acting credits include stage productions of "Ain't Misbehavin''" with Della Reese and movies such as "The Nutty Professor II " and "The Klumps." Following the talk story with Payne, all are invited to attend a gospel choir workshop at 7:30 p.m. Admission to both appearances is free.
