Kihei – THE SOUTH SIDE GETS A TASTE OF ONO GRIMES this weekend with the island band, led by guitarist, singer and radio personality Steve Grimes. The show — that’s sure to be full of flavor — will feature original ballads, funk, R&B, blues, samba and more at 9 p.m. Saturday at Stella Blues Cafe in Kihei. Cover is $10. The band includes Tim Hackbarth on bass (from left); Grimes; Kerry Sofaly on drums; and Dickie Tilton on piano. A guitarist since the age of 13, Grimes composed songs well before he ever dreamed of actually making a musical instrument. In 1972, he began crafting guitars and mandolins, and produces about 20 guitars a year in his Kula guitar shop. In 2009, the musician released a CD of 13 original songs titled “Labor Of Love,” and his band Ono Grimes performs many of these tunes, as well as other songs ranging in style from folk to funk, blues to bossa nova.
