The Art of Peter Max Gallery will celebrate its grand opening in The Shops at Wailea with two gallery events, which are open to the public.
Gov. Neil Abercrombie will present an original painting of the Hawaiian flag created for the governor by Max at 1 p.m. today.
Then, a public reception will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday in the gallery.
Peter Max is pictured with Ringo Star in the artist’s New York studio with the piano Max painted for the former Beatle’s tour. The Art of Peter Max Gallery will open in The Shops at Wailea.
In celebration of the opening, Max has created a new installation of original acrylic paintings called "Maui Series" on display at the new gallery in Wailea.
With paintings on exhibition in hundreds of museums worldwide, Max has painted for various heads of state, including six U.S. presidents, as well as countless celebrities and music icons. His work spans art that appeared on the first U.S. 10-cent stamp bearing the title "Preserve the Environment," to 235 U.S. Border murals greeting millions of people entering America each year.

On the west side, the grand opening will be for Joelle C. Gallery's new location at The Shops at 505 Front Street, next to Pacific'o restaurant.
The public is invited to the celebration at 6 p.m. Friday, which coincides with Lahaina's Friday Town Party. New works by Joelle C. Perz, along with a collection of crafts from local artisans, will be unveiled.

The second annual Maui Open Studios four-week event, which invites viewers directly to the doorsteps of local artists, begins its self-guided islandwide tours from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in West, Central and South Maui for Weekend 1.
