Man held in assault case
WAILUKU - A 56-year-old Hana man who allegedly punched two police officers in the face Sunday afternoon was being held on $2,200 bail at the Wailuku Police Station on Monday morning, police said.
Ernest Klein was charged with two counts of first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and one count of resisting arrest, records show.
Police said that two officers were responding to a home in Hana to make a welfare check after someone from the residence called 911 at about 2:15 p.m. Sunday and hung up.
When dispatchers called the number back the person who answered said he didn't need police help but police went to check anyway.
As police responded to the residence and were radioing for an ambulance to assist the man who may have needed psychological help, the man struck the two officers in the face, police said. Police eventually subdued the man.
The officers were not seriously injured.
