Guava, Gouda & Caviar teams with Stuey’s Wine Cellar for fun pairings

March 22, 2012
The Maui News

Many people are already familiar with the Guava, Gouda & Caviar store that opened in the Wailea Gateway shopping center below Monkeypod Kitchen and across the parking lot from Pita Paradise.

Now, it's up and running with Wailea's only tasting room called Stuey's Wine Cellar. Basically, you may taste wines and order an artisanal cheese plate at Stuey's and walk next door and buy your favorites.

"Not only does GG&C sell over 75 types of cheese, there is a wonderful charcuterie selection that includes Prosciutto and Cotto hams from Parma, Italy, Serrano ham from Spain, various domestic salumes and pates, and a plethora of other accoutrements to go with cheese, wine and beer!" says Ann Tuomela, owner. "You will also find small but fine selection of spirits."

GG&C is open daily with hours from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., except for Sunday, when it closes at 7 p.m. Stuey's tasting room is also now open daily from 4 to 8 p.m., when most customers crave a sip and a nibble.

"You will find 20 to 30 wine selections on any given day. These wine selections are global, eclectic and value-driven," says Tuomela.

"The servings we pour at Stuey's are one-and-a-half ounces, served one at a time. You may order three, five or seven tasters for the costs of $15, $20 and $24, respectively," she continues.

In addition, Stuey's offers a monthly event pairing five wines with five cheeses. It always has a theme, be it animal wines or country of origin.

"These are held the last Sunday of each month with three time offerings: 1:30, 3 and 4:30 p.m," says Tuomela.

Guava, Gouda & Caviar will also present a fundraiser at Stella Blues Cafe in Kihei for Mana 'Olana Paddlers from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

"Mana 'Olana is a nonprofit canoe club in Kihei that provides support and water activity for cancer survivors," Tuomela says. "We will be doing five rose wines and five cheeses as accompaniments."

The cost is $30 per person with proceeds going to the club. Call Mary Duggans at 876-1553 for reservations. For more details about Guava, Gouda & Caviar as well as Stuey's Wine Cellar, call 874-3930.
