Volunteers sought for underwater cleanup

The public is invited to assist ocean recreation business leaders and the fishing community in conducting an underwater cleanup at McGregor Point and Kanaloa Point on Sunday.

The partnership started several years ago by the Maui Reef Fund, a program of Hawaii Wildlife Fund along with community fishermen, including Brian Yoshikawa of Maui Sporting Goods. The group will remove lead weights, fishing lines and other debris from the reef, and the materials will be recycled.

Conservation International recently awarded Hawaii Wildlife Fund a $19,000 grant to reduce the problem of underwater debris.

To assist with the underwater reef cleanup, RSVP by Friday to Hannah Bernard, president of the Hawaii Wildlife Fund, and fiscal agent of Maui Reef Fund at 280-8124 or Yoshikawa at 244-0011.
