Aloha Bluegrass Band

March 29, 2012
The Maui News
PAIA – DON’T MISS A BEAT OF BLUEGRASS when The Aloha Bluegrass Band comes to Paia Bay Cafe for a free all-ages concert from 6 to 8 tonight. Hailing from Appalachia, the West Coast and Alaska, the band plays a mix of original and traditional songs that honor first generation masters while bringing a fresh, new energy to bluegrass and folk music. Driving rhythm, soaring fiddling, hot picking and tight harmonies are combined with a unique passion and excitement from band members Donny Chavez (guitar), K.C. Groves (mandolin, bass, guitar), Katy Rexford (fiddle), David Richey (dobro, guitar) and Rion Schmidt (banjo, guitar). Aloha Bluegrass is playing at the north shore cafe as part of the group’s semi-annual tour to Hawaii to teach and organize the Aloha Music Academy, which includes instrumental, song and dance instruction for kids and adults on Maui, Oahu and the Big Island. Members have been teaching bluegrass and folk music on Maui for the past seven years; this year’s kids camp is slated Friday through Sunday at Haleakala Waldorf School. For more information on the camps, visit www.bluegrasscampsforkids.com.
