March 30, 2012
The Maui News

MAKENA - Maundy Thursday and Easter sunrise services are planned at Keawala'i Church.

A Tenebrae service will be held on Maundy Thursday, beginning at 7 p.m. Tenebrae is a service with roots back to the eighth century and symbolizes the suffering and death of Christ and the darkness that filled the Earth when Jesus was crucified. Candles that are used in the service represent Jesus Christ as the Light of the World.

The service will include short readings and singing responses, followed by the extinguishing of 10 candles, one at a time. The service will conclude in darkness and silence.

The evening also will feature Na Leo Nahenahe, the adult choir. The anthem "Can You Drink the Cup" will be the theme for Tenebrae.

The Easter sunrise service on April 8 will begin at 7:30 a.m. This year's theme is "Because He Lives."

There will be the presentation of the floral cross, and those attending are invited to bring a single stem flower or lei for the cross. The service also will include the celebration of The Lord's Supper.

Those attending are encouraged to bring a nonperishable food item for the Maui Food Bank.

"Because He Lives" will be sung by the church choir, under the direction of Stephen Haines. The service also will feature Danny Brown, Ellen Caringer and George Kahumoku.

Seating will be provided for 800 people. Parking will be available in the church overflow parking along along the lower beach road and upper highway. The church is located at 5300 Makena Road. For more information, call 879-5557.
