Moped rider dies after Lahaina crash

WAILUKU -- A moped operator who was critically injured in a crash in Lahaina died Sunday night at Maui Memorial Medical Center, police said.

He was identified as 53-year-old Kana Cox Jr. of Lahaina.

The collision occurred at 11:34 a.m. Sunday as Cox was riding his blue Sunny moped north on Honoapiilani Highway. At Wahikuli Road, he collided with a maroon Ford F-150 pickup truck that was turning right from the highway onto Wahikuli Road, police said.

Police said the truck failed to yield the right of way to the moped.

Cox was taken off life support and was pronounced dead at 8:16 p.m., police said.
