Man found unconscious dies
KAHANA - A 50-year-old Kahului man died after he was found unconscious in the water early Thursday while collecting shells south of Pohaku Beach Park in Kahana, officials said.
After the man's nephew found him, other fishermen helped get the man out of the water, said Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.
Responding to the 2:21 a.m. call, Lahaina patrol officers and firefighters attempted to revive the man, with firefighters taking him from the shoreline area to an ambulance.
The man and his nephew had been in the area off Lower Honoapiilani Road since about 10 p.m. Wednesday, said Capt. John Jakubczak, commander of the Lahaina Patrol District. An autopsy is pending.

Grant to aid Native Hawaiians
KAHULUI - The Office of Hawaiian Affairs has awarded a $430,000 grant to the University of Hawaii Maui College for the Liko A'e Native Hawaiian Scholarship Program.
The grant will provide financial aid to Native Hawaiian students pursuing higher education in the 2012-13 academic year, with a focus on nontraditional students attending accredited universities and colleges nationwide and identified vocational schools in Hawaii. Awards range between $2,000 and $5,000 per full-time student.

Hikers sustain injuries in fall
A Florida woman suffered possible head and neck injuries when a fellow hiker fell about 50 feet down a mountain and landed on her Thursday, fire officials said.
A group of friends was hiking in the area known as "Three Sisters," or "Chutes and Ladders," off Honoapiilani Highway near Milepost 37 when the incident occurred at about 4:45 p.m.
The 21-year-old woman from Jacksonville, Fla., was at the bottom of the mountain when her friend hiking above her lost her grip on the rope she was using to climb down.
The woman who slipped, a 30-year-old from Flagstaff, Ariz., suffered minor injuries when she landed on the other woman, officials said.
The Fire Department's Air One helicopter flew both women out of the area.
The 21-year-old woman was taken by ambulance to Maui Memorial Medical Center. The severity of her injuries was not immediately known.
The other woman was treated and released by medics.
Another hiker also suffered minor injuries when the woman fell and was treated and released at the scene.
