100 Years Ago

1912 - Now that electricity is a certainty for the towns of Wailuku and Kahului, and with the prospect of the streets being well lighted, the citizens should get together and prepare for some kind of celebration. Ideas as to what should constitute this celebration differ.

75 Years Ago

1937 - Garden boys at the Paia School were rewarded for their diligent work in making their school garden into the best on the island as judged in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin in its annual school garden contest. The prize carried with it a portrait of Capt. George Vancouver.

50 Years Ago

1962 -The grand-opening festivities for Club Rodeo's Steak House will get under way with a parade of cowboys on 50 horses. They will be followed by several orchestras set up on trucks. The Steak House will be part of the recently refurbished Club Rodeo owned and operated by Salvador and Mary Molina for many years.

25 Years Ago

1987 - The Kihei Library has been taken under the wing of the state library system and is now officially a branch library. The Kihei Library has operated since August 1982.

10 Years Ago

2002 - Instead of the usual high-pitched siren, the newest fire alarm at Kalaupapa emits a series of sharp barking sounds. Last week, an 18-month-old German shepherd mix saved the town from possible disaster when he alerted the unsuspecting community that an electric line was shooting sparks and starting to set the pole on fire.
