Trash becomes works of art

First Photo: Waikapu's Chris Barca places his piece titled "Things I Broke" on a table Saturday morning with other entries during receiving day for the annual Art of Trash at the Maui Mall. Barca said that his piece included parts from a 1993 Suzuki Sidekick, a camera and a guitar.

Second Photo: Tim Gunter's entry made from recycled and reused items features a bottle in a ship.

Third Photo: Artwork awaiting the arrival of juror Ira Ono includes Barca's "Things I Broke" and a 3-D computer surf scene by Noa Herrera. Art of Trash 2012 begins Friday at 6 p.m. with a reception and artist awards and will run through May 13. After opening night, the exhibit will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
