PLAYA VENAO, Panama - Maui surfers Kain Daly and Ian Gentil competed at the ISA World Junior Surfing Championship on Monday, both advancing out of their heats.
In the boys under-16 division, Gentil earned the highest single-wave score of the competition so far, a 9.57, and finished with a two-wave score of 16.24 to win his first-round heat.
Competing in the U18 division, Daly is already through to the third round, having won his heats in the first and second rounds with scores of 10.43 and 13.60.
Both Daly and Gentil are representing Hawaii in the competition.
Another Maui surfer, Joao Marco Maffini, is representing Italy. He was sent to the first repercharge round after finishing third in his first-round heat at U18.
The competition is expected to continue today.
