Cerebral Cafe to offer motivation, inspiration, leadership video talks

April 18, 2012
The Maui News

KAHULUI - Motivation, inspiration and leadership will be the topics of Tuesday's Cerebral Cafe at the University of Hawaii Maui College Class Act restaurant.

Three TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) video talks will be presented.

* "The Surprising Science Of Motivation" with career analyst Dan Pink examining the puzzle of motivation. He starts with a fact that social scientists know but most managers don't, that traditional rewards aren't always as effective as they think.

* "How Great Leaders Inspire Action" with Simon Sinek, who has a simple but powerful model for inspirational leadership. It all starts with a golden circle and the question "why?" His examples include Apple Inc., Martin Luther King Jr. and the Wright Brothers.

* "Tribal Leadership" with David Logan, who talks about the five kinds of tribes that humans naturally form - in schools, in workplaces, even at the driver's license bureau. By understanding shared tribal tendencies, everyone can help lead others to become better individuals.

The gathering runs from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is a $20 cost, which includes a three-course lunch.
