WAILUKU -- Police have identified the victim of a fatal motorcycle crash Friday in Keokea as 41-year-old Jason Williamson of Kula.
The crash happened around 7 p.m. on Kula Highway at the entrance of Keokea Park. Police said their preliminary investigation showed that a silver 2004 Jeep Cherokee was traveling south on Kula Highway and made a left turn into the park.
At the same time, a red 2004 Honda XR250 motorcycle driven north by Williamson crashed into the right passenger side of the Cherokee, police said. Williamson was wearing a helmet, but he died at the crash scene. The motorcycle is more commonly known as a dirt bike.
The Jeep Cherokee was driven by a 41-year-old Pukalani man and held two passengers -- a 39-year-old woman and a 3-year-old boy, police said. The woman sustained a contusion to her forehead and multiple lacerations to her face. The child suffered cuts to his face. Both were treated and released from the Maui Memorial Medical Center's emergency room.
Seat belts were worn by everyone in the Jeep.
Williamson's death marks the 12th traffic fatality this year in Maui County, compared with three at the same time last year.
