The Maui News

PLAYA VENAO, Panama - Kain Daly of Kuau staved off elimination Saturday at the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships after he was sent to the repercharge rounds.

Daly, competing in the boys under-18 division, placed last in his fifth-round heat with a two-wave score of 3.10, putting him in the eighth repercharge round. Needing to place second or better to remain in the competition, Daly posted a score of 12.60 to finish behind only Brazil's Matheus Navarro (18.60) and advance to the ninth repercharge round.

Daly must get through two more repercharge rounds to make the final.

In the boys U16 division, Paia's Ian Gentil was eliminated in the seventh repercharge round when he finished third in his heat with a 9.50.

Competition is scheduled to finish today.
