The 30-day jail term handed out to a man who sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl (The Maui News, April 23) brought tears to my eyes and anger to my heart. This young girl has been hospitalized for the trauma and missed school. Her father testified that this man ruined her life.
If this man had stolen a TV set from a store, he probably would have received a longer sentence. Instead, he stole her innocence.
What will it take to have more realistic sentencing for such horrible crimes? Perhaps a woman judge would have seen things differently.
