License requirements are discriminatory

May 1, 2012
The Maui News

The new state requirement for a woman to show a marriage certificate to get a new driver's license is completely discriminatory. Men do not have to do this. Yes, I have heard the flimsy, bureaucratic reasons, but they are stupid.

Many women have no marriage license or the means to obtain a new one. They were married in another country, which may no longer exist, or the foreign government agency holding such licenses was bombed out or burned down, or they were married long ago before paper documents were computerized and are not easy to obtain.

A passport should be all that is required, for this information was needed to obtain that passport. Even showing the applicant's previous Hawaii driver's license should qualify.

Where is Gloria Allred or the ACLU when they are needed?
