With a pair of Mainland experts helping Maui volunteers, work on the final phase of the Paia Youth & Cultural Center’s Stonewave Skate Park is expected to be finished within a month. Skate park builders Jesse McDowell (from right) and Sky Thompson use trowels to smooth a just-poured concrete pyramid Tuesday morning while park program director Ryan Worcester uses a pick to clear fill. The 1600-square-foot project replaces temporary wooden ramps at one corner of the popular facility that opened in 2004. Worcester said the project has received plenty of kokua from volunteers as well as companies that have provided materials for free or at reduced prices.
