The Maui News

Paia's Turnbull Fine Art gallery recently debuted its newest contemporary artist, Brad Forsythe. "Work straight out of Soho New York" is one of the comments gallery owner Christine Turnbull has heard. However, Forsythe's work is created here, on the island of Maui.

"When I look at Brad's paintings, I see an enormous amount of skill - in the application of the paint, the control of the mood and his color sense," said Turnbull.

"He seems to have an innate sense of structure that emerges in the most subtle ways . . . We are honored to be debuting Brad's work. Brad's work is bright, urban, and thought provoking. His style is like no other contemporary work you'll see here on Maui."

Brad Forsythe is the newest contemporary artist to show his work at Paia’s Turnbull Fine Art gallery. “In Quest of Color,” (above) is an example of his abstract work inspired by nature.

Forsythe has spent a lifetime working in the creative arts field and has been honored with numerous local, regional and national industry awards for creative excellence. He began painting as a traditional landscape artist, and over the past decade has painted exclusively in the abstract, nonrepresentational style of expression.

The inspiration for his work is found in the stunning beauty throughout the island of Maui.

"My art is expressed as a juxtaposition of color, shape and brush stroke combinations using a variety of application techniques," said Forsythe. "I base my art on the natural environment ultimately communicating the emotions I feel while in nature. While others may perceive irregularly-arranged shapes and random colors, I see a balance, a symmetry and a natural proportionality to the landscape. I call this sense of balance the 'perfect imperfection of nature.' "

The gallery is open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays 11 a.m. to 5 pm.

Maui artist Christina DeHoff will be debuting a new oil painting from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday at Images Fine Art Gallery in Lahaina. The public is invited to this "Featured Artist Event."

DeHoff's artwork explores the many layers of the human spirit.

"I continue to feel a calling to create paintings that tell stories of the heart and serve as reminders to the viewer that our lives are magical and full of so much possibility," said DeHoff.

Her new painting "Awakened Reflections" explores this essence. In this painting a young woman gazes into a reflecting pool to see her divine self being mirrored back . . . reminding her that there is so much more to her than meets the eye.

Images Fine Art Gallery is located at 900 Front St. in Lahaina, directly behind the Hard Rock Cafe. Free parking is available. For more information, call 662-0884 or email gallery@imagesinc.com.
