HANA - A fisherman whose body was recovered Wednesday afternoon from waters near Hana was identified as 39-year-old Dion Jex, police said.

Divers located his body in about 30 feet of water 50 to 75 yards offshore after firefighters and police responded to a 2:56 p.m. call Wednesday at Mile Marker 47 in the Koali area about five miles toward Kipahulu from Hana town, said police Lt. Mitchell Pellazar, commander of the Hana Patrol District.

Jex was doing construction work at a residence there and after work told a co-worker he was going fishing, he said. Within five or 10 minutes, the co-worker reported hearing Jex yelling for help in the surf.

Firefighters training on personal watercraft a couple of miles away were among those responding to the rocky coastline area, Pellazar said. Hana firefighters and a fire rescue crew aboard the Fire Department's Air One helicopter also responded.

Jex, who previously lived in Hana, had been living on the Mainland for several months before moving back to Hana in recent weeks, Pellazar said.

The death is classified as a miscellaneous accident, he said.
