HONOLULU - Matt Sisto pitched seven solid innings, and the University of Hawaii baseball team defeated Western Athletic Conference-leading New Mexico State 5-2 in the teams' series opener Thursday at Les Murakami Stadium.
With the win, the Rainbows improved to 26-18 and 6-4 in the WAC. The Aggies fell to 30-15 and 7-3.
Sisto (8-3) allowed one run on five hits while walking two and striking out four. He also hit a batter.
After getting their first run in the second inning on a wild pitch by Ryan Beck (4-4), the Rainbows broke open the game with three runs in the fifth. Beck hit Trevor Podratz with a pitch with the bases loaded, and Collin Bennett later hit a two-run single.
Zac Fisher hit a solo home run for New Mexico State.
The teams play again today.
