Two swim to shore after boat sinking
HAIKU - A man and 17-year-old boy managed to swim to shore early Friday after a fishing boat sank about a mile off Pauwela, a fire official said.
Fire crews and the U.S. Coast Guard had launched a search for the boy after the 31-year-old captain of the 21-foot Hailey Kai swam to shore and made his way to the first home he saw on Nahele Road to report what happened at 3:41 a.m., said Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga.
With the man reporting the boy was still missing, a Coast Guard helicopter from Oahu and personnel from Maalaea responded, along with the Fire Department's Air One helicopter and rescue boat.
The search was called off at 6:30 a.m. when it was learned that the boy had made it to shore, Mainaga said.
Neither the boy nor the man needed medical treatment.

Baisa to co-chair Hannemann race
WAILUKU - Maui County Council Member Gladys Baisa has been named as a co-chairwoman for the congressional campaign of former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann.
The Hannemann campaign said that the candidate announced his campaign co-chairs and island coordinators during the grand opening of his statewide campaign headquarters in Honolulu on Thursday night.
Baisa said she accepted an "honorary" position as co-chairwoman for Hannemann in Maui County because of her longtime friendship with the candidate.
The time commitment will be "minimal," she said.
Hannemann's Maui County coordinator is Pukalani resident Michelle Del Rosario.
Hannemann is seeking the Democratic Party's nomination for the 2nd Congressional District seat.
Incumbent U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono is leaving the seat to run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Sen. Daniel Akaka, who is retiring.
