St. Anthony, Lokelani top in milk carton boat race

Paddling tandems from St. Anthony high school and Lokelani Intermediate School captured the grand prizes in the high school and intermediate divisions of the eighth annual Maui Meadow Gold Milk Carton Regatta on April 28 at Hanakao'o Beach Park.

St. Anthony's Dylan Vega and Morgan DuPont paddled the course in 1 minute, 28 seconds. The first runner-up was another St. Anthony team, which had a race time of 1 minute, 37 seconds. The teacher for both of the teams was Paul McLeod.

Lokelani Intermediate's Alan Domingo and Chase Feldt-Antonio raced home to victory in 1 minute, 52.2 seconds. Their teacher was Michael Yeany. The first runner-up was Carden Academy, led by teacher Tracey Takase, with a race time of 2 minute, 12 seconds.

The two-man crew raced around the course in 1 minute, 28 seconds. To win the top prize, the boat also was judged on its design creativity and the spirit of the crew. As an overall winner, the crew won gift cards and ice cream parties for their school. There were 21 boats from 15 schools participating in the race.

Schools were given points for the fastest time, most creative boat design and spirit competition. The overall winners for the regatta received Office Max gift cards and Meadow Gold Ice Cream parties.

Twenty-one boats from 15 schools participated in the free educational event. Alakai Paleka of KPOA was the event mistress of ceremony.

Winners, their schools and their teachers in individual categories follow:

* Spirit winner middle school - Achievement Academy, Rhonda Fonseca.

* Spirit Winner high school - Kamehameha Schools Maui, Kealii Mossman.

* Creative Boat Design middle school - Kalama Intermediate, Monica Heller-Hackett.

* Creative Boat Design high school - St. Anthony, McLeod.

* Teachers Race middle school - Yeany, Lokelani, 1 minute, 42 seconds;

* Teachers Race high school - McLeod, 1 minute, 23 seconds.

The winning teachers received an overnight stay at the Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas.

All participants received a Meadow Gold Dairies MOOOhalo goodie bag, which included items from Meadow Gold Dairies, water bottles from the Nutrition and Physical Activity Coalition and Round Table Pizza discount coupons.

Lani Moo, the mascot of Meadow Gold Dairies, also made an appearance to cheer the schools to victory.
