100 Years Ago

1912 - On Friday, the Kelenahe and Makaike Hui made a haul of akule that totaled 62,228 fish. Okada at the head of a Japanese Hui bought the fish without counting at $1 per 1 Kaau (40 fish). Chin Kee at the head of another Hui bought all the available salt in the district.

75 Years Ago

1937 - The new Maui airport in the Camp 6 area of Puunene moved a step closer to realization yesterday when a committee inspected the proposed site and gave it their approval. The recommendation will go forward to Washington.

50 Years Ago

1962 - Maui's popular Nelson Waikiki made a trip to Honolulu recently to guest star on Lucky's Luau, the new KHVH-TV show taped each Tuesday at the Hawaiian Village. Mr. Waikiki was one of the winners in Lucky Luck's current statewide talent search.

25 Years Ago

1987 - Before Waikapu's dump was a dump, it was a hill of sand. After the sand was hauled away, the hill became a hole. The hole became a dump. And now it's a hill again a mini-mountain of trash. In fact, the hill's so high the dump is scheduled to close next year.

2002 - Baldwin High School student Paolo Panila posed with his art teacher Janet Sato after his piece titled "In the Lap of Learning" was announced as the 21st "Congressional Art Competition" winner for Hawaii`s 2nd Congressional District. Panila, 18, will have his piece displayed in the nation's Capitol for one full year.
